The year 2020 is indeed an eventful year for Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) as it further ascends in global ranking.

To date, for the first time, UUM is ranked in the Top 100 QS World University Rankings (QSWUR) Under 50, positioned at the 81-90 band compared to the 101-150 band in the previous year.

UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato' Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani said UUM made its debut in the world ranking in 2017 when former UUM Vice-Chancellor who is the current Director-General of Higher Education, Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak led the way in implementing the UUM Strategic Plan and ranking agenda.

Prof. Dato' Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani expressed his heartfelt appreciation to Prof. Dato' Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa on the said initiative which has since shown UUM’s remarkable achievement year after year as it continues to consolidate its standings in the world ranking with the unwavering support and hard work of the entire campus community.

He said it was not easy to be positioned at such an elevated level and to be listed on par with the best universities in the world as it involved the reputation and impact of research of a university.

"The surge in the ranking is something that we all can be proud of as we are not only listed, but have shown improvement over the years.

"I hope that we can further boost the academic and employer reputation to enable UUM's ranking to remain elevated," he said.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed hopes that the campus community would continue to work towards ensuring that the other agenda of the university will be successful realised. He also reiterated that there was still much to be done to place UUM on par with the world's leading universities.

According to him, all UUM denizens had been working tirelessly by demonstrating their steadfast commitment in ensuring that the university's agenda was successful realised, this in turn had brought about a huge impact on the university.

In its first issue of 2012, QSWUR Under 50 listed the best universities less than 50 years based on the latest QS World University Rankings.
